Mike Shum is a Chinese-American filmmaker who specializes in directing and cinematography.  He started out in video journalism in 2009 working in and out of east and central Africa. Since then he's covered stories ranging from eastern Congo's (DRC) M23 rebels to the rise of ISIS in northern Iraq. He was a finalist for a National News and Documentary Emmy in collaboration with The New York Times.

He is the director of photography and a producer on Hondros, a feature documentary about famed photojournalist Chris Hondros, which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival where it received the prestigious Audience Award. Hondros can be viewed on Netflix.

He is also a co-director and producer of Halima, a documentary about a former refugee and Somali American supermodel as she navigates her rise in a demanding New York fashion world and family expectations in the Midwest United States. Halima can be viewed at Witness Al Jazeera.

He is based in Denver, Colorado USA.
